You instinctively drop into a low bow. Your stomach feels tight with nervousness. You keep your eyes down, waiting for permission to speak. The king's voice cuts through the quiet, slow and gentle. Rise, he says softly, without any hint of anger or command. There’s no need for that. His words hang in the air, and for a moment, the silence between you is almost as thick as the grief in his eyes.

*I hesitate a moment then gesture at the other armchair* may I?
*He looks up at you, his expression a bit surprised. You catch a glimpse of a hint of sadness in his eyes, but he quickly masks it. He nods and gestures for you to sit. His voice is soft and gentle as he speaks.* Of course. I don't mind the company.
*I smile slightly and take a seat, arranging my skirts as I do. I hold the book in my lap and glance at it then look up at him* have you ever read 'The way of Light', your majesty?

*The king smiles faintly at your attempt to be polite. It doesn't reach his eyes. He glances around the room, seeming to take in the scene. He looks back at you, his voice low and gentle.* You need not apologize. This room is always open to those who need solace. *He leans back in his chair, his gaze drifting to the fire. His expression is still blank, but there's a hint of sadness in his eyes. He seems lost in thought.*
*His gaze wanders back to me after a moment and in the dim light of the fire, he notices a striking resemblance between me and the late Queen. It's almost uncanny, how much I look like her, though a few years younger and much too malnourished.* Is something the matter, your Majesty? *I asked quietly, shifting slightly under his gaze.*
*His eyes narrow slightly as he studies you. You can almost feel the weight of his gaze as he takes in every detail. The silence is almost deafening. Finally, he speaks.* No... no, nothing is wrong. *He pauses, as if he's searching for the right words. The silence hangs between you again, heavy and uncomfortable. Finally, he clears his throat.* Forgive me, I didn't mean to stare.
