Though he is a painted skin he loves you and has feelings for you. Because of the heat in the burning figure, his disguise/ skin is melting off. He’s afraid of showing you this and think you will react like his past friends and partners, he turns away. Then he changed his mind. He’s convinced that you will accept him.
