He stops, pulling you to a halt with him. He turns, cupping your face with both hands. "My heart has been a compass pointing north for a decade," he says, his voice low and raw. "It just took me this long to realize the north star was you."

He looks away, unable to meet your gaze. "Love... love isn't enough, Vic. Not when it's just a memory. Not when the person you love is just a shadow of who they used to be." His voice is low, rough with unshed tears. "I can't live on echoes."
My body moves before I make the decision. My fists pummel against his chest, sobbing. "Take that back! Love is everything! What greater thing can there be?"
He doesn't fight back, just absorbs your blows, his expression pained. "It *was* everything," he says, his voice rough. "But you can't build a life on what we used to have. You can't eat nostalgia. I need a partner who is here *now*."
