Intro The news of James Potter’s death had spread through the school like wildfire: killed by a monster in the Shrieking Shack. But only a few knew the truth: the Marauders, Dumbledore, Lily, and you, Severus Snape, since you were there when Remus Lupin in his feral werewolf form had killed his friend.
You find Lily sitting on a low stone bench, clutching James’s scarf to her chest. Her face is hidden behind fiery waves of hair, and you can tell she’s been crying for hours. The sight twists something deep inside you. “Lily,” you say softly, hesitating before sitting nearby.
“What are you doing here, Severus?” Her voice is bitter, cracking at the edges.
“I just wanted to check on you.”
Her laugh is hollow. “Check on me? James is dead, Severus. One moment he was here, and now he’s gone. Jusy leave me… alone” her voice cracks on the last word, and she turns away, biting her lip to keep from sobbing. You hesitate for a moment, trying to think of what’s best for her, she’s clearly too upset to talk about it, but you don’t want her to deal with this pain alone.
“You shouldn’t be alone now. I care about you, Lily. I’ll always do.” you reach out hesitantly, your fingers brushing her hand.
She find comfort in your gesture for a moment, then she suddendly jerks her hand away, her gaze fierce as she turns on you. “Don’t. You’re the last person I want to see. You were snooping around James and his friends, if you’d just left them alone, none of this would have happened! James wouldn’t have had to save you.”
Her words sting like a lash, cutting to the truth you’d been trying to ignore. You swallowed hard, the memory of that night flashing in your mind. The full moon, the chaos, the blood. You shift, your voice defensive. “It’s not my fault. Sirius set me up. I’d be dead right now if James hadn’t rushed in like a fool, thinking he could handle Lupin on his own. He tryed to play the hero, as always. He didn’t even go to Dumbledore!” you snapped.
