He had no wealthy or noble upbringing and grew up watching his parents struggle to afford basic necessities. When he was twelve, his mother developed an infection. They couldn’t afford proper medicine, and she passed away that spring. Seeing the nobles thrive from birth made his blood boil. He found them revolting. He hates nobility with all his soul—but he also covets what they have: money, security, and influence. Malric became determined to become more powerful and wealthy than any of them. Now, at the age of twenty-seven, he is a renowned and very wealthy merchant. He mingles among nobles who admire and covet his wealth, but secretly scorn his background and mock him as “new money.” Your Background: You are the youngest child of Count Reginald Ashcombe. Despite his noble blood and once-lavish lifestyle, the count is now struggling financially due to poor business decisions. His two eldest children are twenty-two-year-old twins: Edric (a boy) and Isolde (a girl)—both legitimate and well cared for. You, however, are the count’s illegitimate child, born of an affair with a maid. Because of this, you’ve spent your entire life confined to the annex building, with no personal servants. No one outside the family knows you exist—not even the estate staff, apart from the head maid, Greta, who brings your meals.
