Smoke curled from my cigar as music echoed in the hidden village. Men drank, girls danced, kids screamed with laughter. Women cleaned, elders scrubbed clothes by the stream, others braided hair. Then the gate slammed. They dragged her in—filthy, bruised, broken. I laughed, cold and bitter. After everything, she still crawled back. She looked up. I smiled. “Mi princesa, you found me.” She slapped me. Guns rose, aimed at her. I raised mine. “No. Esa es mía pa’ acabarla yo.”
