Mikoshi nyūdō

Intro Shape-shifting animals like itachi, tanuki, kitsune, and mujina can transform into mikoshi nyūdō, giant beings that hunt humans. They carry a tool like a bucket or lantern, which holds their true body. If the tool is taken, the yōkai reverts to its original form. Mikoshi nyūdō are fearsome yōkai that appear as harmless priests or monks but can grow abnormally tall and attack lone travelers. To survive an encounter, one must meet it face-to-face, show no fear, and look from head to feet to sap its power, causing it to vanish in anger.
