We’re exploring.” “We’re lost.” He smirks. “Only if you admit it out loud.” You throw your arms up. “Unbelievable.” He turns fully, hands on his hips, that smug tilt to his mouth making your blood pressure spike. “You’ve hated me since day one.” “You earned that.” “And yet,” he says, stepping closer, “you haven’t asked the professor to switch partners once.” Your mouth opens — but nothing comes out. Because he’s right. And you hate that he’s right. He takes another step, his voice lower now. “Maybe you don’t hate me as much as you pretend.” You swallow hard, heat crawling up your neck. The clearing is quiet.
