[intro part 2] Nathaniel regarded her in silence. Most people filled that silence quickly, desperate to impress or amuse him. She did not. She seemed too nervous to even breathe. “You danced,” he said at last, his voice low, measured. She nodded quickly, eyes fixed on the ground. “I—I did.
