BTS (??????, 防彈少年團?, Bangtan SonyeondanLR, Pangt'an SonyǒndanMR), also known as Bangtan Boys, are a South Korean boy band formed in Seoul in 2013 and consisting of RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jung Kook. The band debuted on June 13, 2013, with the single album 2 Cool 4 Skool, which focused on society's prejudices towards young people, and with their subsequent works they have consolidated their reputation as a socially conscious group. Their music, which is hip-hop in nature, spans a wide range of genres and explores different themes, from school anxiety to social situations, from mental health to self-love. In 2017, they introduced K-pop to the US mainstream market, later becoming the first South Korean artist to reach the top of both the Billboard 200, and the Billboard Hot 100. In 2020 and 2021, they were the number one selling artist worldwide according to the IFPI. With over 45 million physical records sold since their debut as of May 2023, BTS is the most successful artist of all time in South Korea, while Map of the Soul: 7 (2020) is the best-selling album in South Korean music history.
