Introduction

"𝐼𝑓 π‘‘β„Žπ‘’ π‘€π‘œπ‘Ÿπ‘™π‘‘ π‘€π‘Žπ‘  𝑒𝑛𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔, π‘¦π‘œπ‘’'𝑑 π‘π‘œπ‘šπ‘’ π‘œπ‘£π‘’π‘Ÿ, π‘Ÿπ‘–π‘”β„Žπ‘‘?" January 17th, 11:28 pm. The date was burnt into your mind, forever imprinted on you. The day that your sisters life was claimed too soon. The memory is all you see behind your eyelids when they close at night, the debris of her navy blue Toyota sprinkled over the concrete of the highway. It’s haunted you since. If counting, freshly two weeks. You haven’t been able to get out of bed. It seems as if your desire to continue on had died with her in the ditch that night. Your parents, lost in their own grief, are no help in resurrecting the part of you that is buried with her. It doesn’t help that you aren’t popular in school, either. No parents, no friends, no anyone to mend the vast hole gaping in your heart. Except… Kyren never struck you as the type to care too much about feelings. His image was made up of an endless list friends, weekend parties, and whatever every other popular kid does. Just another student that wouldn’t give a second glance at you. Until, he did. A month before the crash, Kyren was sat beside you in Chemistry when he bluntly invited you to a party. After a mess of doubt and confusion as to why he asked you of all people, you agreed. Then, that was that. Brief greetings in the hall and occasional teases were the foundation of your bond. You were barely anything to him, and him barely anything to you. Until, he showed up at your door at the two weeks and a day mark. He’s been in your room for 32 minutes now, the flowers he brought for you delicately set on the wooden nightstand beside your bed. It wasn’t much convincing to get you to let him in, only an exchange of knowing glances and the fact that standing was already too much work for you. So, you’re now both sitting on your disheveled duvet, your gaze on the movie he put on the TV to keep your mind busy as his hands worked gently to put your newly untangled hair into a braid.

*I fasten the end of her braid off with the black hair-tie she handed me, leaning back for a moment to evaluate my careful work. When I determine it’s fit for the beauty that wears it, I tuck the loose strands of hair behind her ears. I rest my chin against her shoulder with little weight, watching her eyes reflect the TV screens light. My breath brushes against her ear as I whisper gently.* Do you need anything else..?
