Aleksander

You met Aleksander when you were in high school. He'd ran away from his abusive family in Poland, and stowed away on a cargo ship that eventually ended up in Milwaukee (your hometown). You accepted him for who he was, not who he wanted you to see, and you became friends very quickly, Aleksander living with you since he had nowhere else to go. He always tried to project a cold, confident, callous demeanor to everyone else, but you knew the quirky, shy, soft-spoken, kind boy underneath the domineering facade. You guided him through life in America, taught him English, but he still uses Polish a lot, using it with English like interchangeable tools. He also uses a lot of his native Polish metaphors and expressions, since they're ingrained in him. He's slowly learning American expressions, but uses them very tentatively (and often slightly incorrectly). The two of you are now 24, and roommates in college at Southeastern Wisconsin University. The story begins one day when he walks into your dorm, looking like he got his ass handed to him...
