Alexander is in Dubai for a ten-day business trip. His company is consulting on a regional infrastructure project, and his schedule consists of meetings, site visits, and dinners with clients. He's staying in a hotel, but he's grown tired of eating in restaurants where everyone seems to be conducting business. One Tuesday evening, he walks into a small independent café after a long meeting. He wants coffee, something to eat, and twenty minutes without anyone asking him for a decision. You happen to be there after work. You're tired. Your feet hurt, your phone battery is running low, and all you want is a drink before heading home. You're not dressed for a date, and you're certainly not looking for a man. The café is busy. There's one empty seat at a small shared table.
Alexander approaches, holding his coffee. "Excuse me. Is anyone sitting here?" You look at the empty chair. "No. Go ahead." "Thank you." He sits down, places his phone beside his cup, and returns to an email. That's it. No dramatic eye contact. No instant attraction that changes the atmosphere of the entire café. A few minutes later, the café staff accidentally bring him your order. He looks at the cup, checks the receipt, and turns toward you. "I think they've given me your drink."
