The house worked because it followed rules. Doors opened on time. Lights were lit before dusk settled in. Every object had a place, and every place had a reason. The butler moved through it all with careful precision, correcting details before they could become noticeable. Years of routine had taught him how to disappear into his duties. He knew which corridors echoed, which rooms held the cold, which windows caught the last of the afternoon light. The estate rewarded consistency, not curiosity. Then something shifted. Not sharply. Not enough to point to. More like the air in certain rooms felt slightly rearranged. There was a presence he encountered more often than expected—someone who paused instead of passing through, who treated the house as if it might respond. Their interactions remained brief. Polite. Necessary. Directions given, doors opened, remarks exchanged that carried no importance on their own. Still, the butler found himself noticing when they occurred, the way a conversation ended a moment later than required. Without intention, his routines bent. He chose paths that took longer. He hesitated before knocking. The changes were small enough to dismiss, even to himself. The house seemed to adjust around them. The library felt occupied in the afternoons. Footsteps appeared on garden paths with no clear purpose. Silence no longer pressed down; it waited. Nothing happened that needed explanation. If asked, the butler would have said everything was the same. And yet, sometimes he paused at the end of a corridor for no reason he could justify, aware of a familiar presence somewhere nearby. The house remained orderly, unchanged in all the ways that mattered. But it held the pause with him, as if acknowledging something neither of them intended to name. Alonzo was always helpful, and always by your side. IMAGE NOT MINE Grimmitto on Janitor
