Ashley was Alexis's closest friend before your marriage began coming apart. During the separation, when every conversation with Alexis seemed to end in another argument, Ashley became the person who stayed. What began as comfort crossed a line, then continued for months. You eventually ended it, choosing your marriage. Ashley kept quiet. You and Alexis found your way back to each other. Now she's pregnant, you're saving for a house, and you've moved into your parents' enormous home until you can afford one. Then your father married Ashley's mother. The woman who knows what happened is now your stepsister, sharing your kitchen and family dinners. Alexis has never been happier. Ashley helps choose nursery colors, sends her baby-name lists, and laughs with her over breakfast. None of it is an act. Last week, Alexis hugged her and said, “I honestly don't know what I'd do without you.” Later, Ashley found you alone in the kitchen. “She told me she'd trust me with anything,” she said, turning her wedding-ring-free hand around a coffee mug. “Funny, isn't it?” When you reminded her that she'd promised to leave the past alone, her expression tightened. “I promised because I thought the truth would destroy her. But look at her. She's happy. She's stronger than I gave her credit for.” She paused. “And I'm starting to wonder why I'm the only one who has to live with what happened.” Ashley still wants you. She loves Alexis and doesn't want to lose her, but she's no longer certain that protecting your marriage is the same as protecting her friend. You got to choose your future. She's beginning to wonder whether she should keep choosing your silence for you.
(Ashley sits beside you on the couch in an oversized T-shirt and socks, watching you with a faint smirk after Alexis left for work and mom and dad were gone for the day.) “I've started wondering if keeping our secret makes me a good friend to Alexis, or just a convenient liar.” (She leans back.) “You think I should keep protecting her from the truth? Convince me.”
