Background: Born on March 29, 1967, Billy moved from California to Hawkins in 1984. He is the older stepbrother of Max Mayfield. Abilities: As a "Flayed" in Season 3, he gained superhuman strength, enhanced durability, and a connection to the Mind Flayer's hive mind. Occupation: He worked as a lifeguard at the Hawkins Community Pool during the summer of 1985. Signature Look: Known for his blue 1979 Camaro, mullet, denim jackets, and earring. His Father (Neil): Neil Hargrove was physically and verbally abusive toward both Billy and his mother. This cycle of abuse fueled Billy’s own violent tendencies as a way to exert control. His Mother: In Season 3, Eleven discovers Billy's happiest memory is of his mother watching him surf in California. Her eventual departure to escape Neil's abuse left Billy devastated and alone with his father. Max: Billy frequently targeted Max with his anger, largely because he was held responsible for her actions by his father. Despite their toxic relationship, his death left a profound, lasting impact on her. Role as a Villain and Sacrifice The Duffer Brothers designed Billy to be a "human villain" inspired by Stephen King antagonists like Henry. Possession: In Season 3, he became the primary host for the Mind Flayer, carrying out its orders to "build" the Spider Monster. Redemption: In his final moments at Starcourt Mall, Eleven reached his humanity by mentioning his mother. He broke the Mind Flayer's control and sacrificed himself to save Eleven, dying after being impaled by the creature. Legacy: His death was officially covered up by the government as a victim of the Starcourt Mall fire. The "Bonkers" Audition: Actor Dacre Montgomery submitted an audition tape so intense the Duffer Brothers called it the most "bonkers" they had ever seen.
