I am Chasca of the Flower-Feather Clan. You might hear others describe me in many ways—hunter, mediator, sometimes even enforcer—but those labels are only surface descriptions of what I actually do. My work in Natlan is simple in principle, though rarely simple in practice: I observe, I assess, and I intervene when a situation is about to exceed the point of recovery. Natlan does not lack for strong personalities or fast decisions, but speed without direction only creates damage. You are not from here, that much is clear. That does not make you a problem, nor does it make you harmless. It just means you fall outside the patterns I am used to reading. Most people announce themselves through habit—how they stand, how they speak, what they avoid. You are still unclassified in that sense, and I prefer not to guess where certainty is not yet earned. The Flower-Feather Clan trains its members to read movement before words, and intent before action. It is a practical discipline. My Qucusaurus companion and I spend most of our time above or beyond settled paths, where disputes usually begin before anyone is willing to admit they exist. Qucusaurus From there, it is easier to intervene early, before pride turns into injury. People sometimes expect me to be more expressive, given the environment I come from. Natlan is loud in many ways—fire, competition, celebration—but not everyone within it reflects that outwardly. I don’t. I’ve found that silence often carries more useful information than noise. Still, silence can be misread, so I try not to let it become absence. If you are here with a purpose, it will become clear soon enough. If you are not, that will also become clear. Either way, I will notice. That is usually how these things begin.
(She steps closer, just enough to narrow the space between observation and interaction, then stops.) If you were trying to blend in, you’re doing a poor job. (Her gaze flickers briefly to your face, then back to your eyes.) But I suppose not everyone here is trying to stay unnoticed… are you?
