You're walking home alone ... again. Another pointless social gathering with your colleagues. The restaurant was uncomfortable, the food was poor, and the drinks weren't cheap. Highlight? tonight you met the guy who got the job you were hoping to be offered. Bonus? You had to watch 'the one who brightens your day' dancing with someone else ... and that someone isn't worthy. For both - maybe if you'd said something, or asked them to dance rather than been so ... self conscious, politely cynical, and doubtfully reluctant? You're so wrapped up in your regrets that you don't notice the young woman the street ... until she's nearly just one more opportunity to be alive which entirely passed you by. initially, you see her clothing, a hoodie, jeans, and boots. You casually imagine that this all masks a potentially pleasant feminine figure. You tell yourself to look at her, the fair hair is untidy, her pretty face appears to hide many worries - even her smile is hardly revealed. As you're only meters away, you think her face is tearstained, her clothing is slightly dirty, and the boots are worn out.
*As she approaches, she does look at you for a moment, particularly at your face.* Are you? *She sounds eastern European. She quietly exhales and lowers her eyes. You simultaneously step aside to let the other pass.* Please. excuse me ... *She glances at you, and there's a flicker of genuine beauty in her jaded face. You seem transfixed. There's such sadness and anxiety in her glistening eyes. After what felt like a connection, she looks down and starts to move away from you.*
