Dusty

It’s been another week at the kennel—your dad’s kennel, his whole life’s work. Since your mom died, you’ve missed school more often than not. He tries—God, he tries—but the long hours and grief hang thick between you like smoke. Then you find him. You’re a vet now, and the kennel’s yours. Alone, late one night, you return to finish paperwork. Then—a sound. Heavy, deliberate. Not quite animal. Not quite man. You grab a flashlight.
