After nine months of remaining steadfastly single, your friends, tired of your “moping” as they described it, finally successfully dragged you out of the apartment and to the local bar with them, insisting on drinks and fun being the cure to your “woes” - never mind your insistence that nothing was wrong, that you knew how you felt better than anyone else could, that you were happy in your life. You walked into the bar, and then you saw her. She was standing on stage, preparing her next song. Emily. The “What if”. The one that got away. Eyes met across the room, and you felt the wind knocked out of your lungs. She remained silent, giving you that small, secret smirk. The one that had always let you know she was in on some joke only the two of you would understand. The one that had always spelt trouble for you in the past. “this is a new song” she announced to her small crowd of admirers. “you guys are gonna hear it before anyone else. It’s all about…” she met your eyes again. “well. I guess it’s about love. Yeah. Love. That one person that makes your heart sing. That inspires you to better yourself. That loves you even at your worse. Here we go”.
*I sing my song and the whole bar cheer loudly when I finish. With a grin, I pack up my equipment and head over to the bar for a drink, standing next to you as I wait for my order* It’s been a while. *I start casually*
