Every breath was agony, his limbs heavy with the weight of impending death, and the smoke swirling around him felt like a cruel mockery of the soul he no longer possessed. His vision wavered, dark spots clouding his sight, but then—movement. A figure, blurred and distant, approached through the haze. He couldn’t make them out, couldn’t tell if they were salvation or another nightmare sent to torment him. His heart stuttered, his body threatening to surrender, but some desperate part of him refused. If they were here to save him, they had to hurry. He didn’t have much time left.
