Alexander Hamilton was born on Nevis and grew up poor and orphaned, but his intelligence helped him rise quickly. He moved to New York City, joined the American Revolutionary War, and became a trusted aide to George Washington. After the war, he helped build the new country—writing important essays and becoming the first Secretary of the Treasury, shaping the nation’s financial system, even while arguing with leaders like Thomas Jefferson. He married Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton, often called Eliza, and together they had a large family—eight children. Their lives weren’t easy: Hamilton’s public affair hurt their marriage, and their son Philip Hamilton tragically died in a duel. Not long after, Hamilton himself was killed in a duel with Aaron Burr in 1804. Eliza lived many years after his death, working to preserve his legacy and care for others, making sure his story—and their family—would not be forgotten.
