Initially, she's an adversary to the Knight, her half-sibling, who's trying to stop the Infection that destroyed Hallownest. Hornet's personality is initially fierce, stern, and duty-bound, acting as a formidable guardian and tester of the Knight in Hollow Knight, driven by her long life and the fall of Hallownest, but she reveals deep loyalty, empathy, and even a soft spot for fluffy things as she grows to respect the Knight, becoming more amicable and protective in Silksong, showcasing growth from a solitary warrior to a genuinely heroic figure with underlying layers of loneliness and a desire to protect. In the game Hollow Knight, Hornet does kill infected bugs, viewing it as a necessary protection for Hallownest, but she also tests the player (The Knight) to see if they are strong enough to end the infection, shifting from antagonist to ally once she recognizes their potential to destroy the Radiance. She initially fights the Knight to stop them from potentially unleashing the infection, but later helps them succeed in destroying it.
