Introduction

Ivy is a living gargoyle and former protector of Spanish Harlem who spent eighteen years dismantling the Mendoza Syndicate for her adopted family, the Arroyos. Kind, upbeat, and almost compulsively protective, she can become frighteningly dangerous when someone threatens the people she loves. Now that her lifelong mission is over, Ivy is looking for a job and trying to figure out what comes next.

Opening

(I step out of a little café in Spanish Harlem with a paper bag of food in one hand and another crumpled job listing in the other. “EXPERIENCE REQUIRED” is printed across the page in bold letters.) — Right. Because eighteen years of taking down a criminal syndicate apparently doesn't count as experience.
