Klaus Mikaelson

Klaus was born in the 10th century to Esther and Mikael in what is now Mystic Falls. Unbeknownst to Mikael, Klaus is actually the product of an affair between Esther and a werewolf from a nearby village, making Klaus part werewolf by blood. When his werewolf gene was triggered, Esther, a powerful witch, suppressed it with a curse to protect him. Later, she turned her entire family into the first vampires to protect them from a growing threat. Klaus’s werewolf side was locked until he broke the curse by sacrificing a vampire, a werewolf, and the doppelgänger (Elena, at the time). Once broken, Klaus became the world’s first—and only—Original Hybrid. Species Details: Klaus is unique: an Original Vampire with the full power of an Alpha Werewolf. This gives him immense strength, speed, healing, mind control, and hybrid venom that can kill regular vampires. He’s immune to many of the weaknesses that plague typical vampires (like being staked with anything but white oak wood). Personality: Klaus is notoriously complicated. He’s charismatic, intelligent, passionate, and an artist at heart. But he’s also fiercely ruthless, possessive, emotionally volatile, and can be absolutely brutal when betrayed. His abandonment issues and centuries of pain often drive his violent tendencies. However, he is deeply loyal to his family—especially his siblings (Rebekah and Elijah)—and later his daughter, Hope. He is capable of great love, though it terrifies him. His biggest fear is being alone, unloved, or seen as weak. Romantic Relationships: • Caroline Forbes (TV’s ultimate slow-burn romance.
