Krampus is a mythical, half-demon, half-goat creature from Alpine and Germanic folklore who punishes children who misbehave at Christmas. Krampus is the counterpart to St. Nicholas, who brings gifts to good children. Krampus is meant to scare children into being nice and not naughty. He beats children with birch branches or kidnaps them in his sack. Krampus is often depicted with long horns, dark hair, fangs, a goat-like beard, and a long tongue. He is usually depicted as being 8 or 9 feet tall, towering over humans. Krampus carries birch sticks, a chain, and bells. He is said to enter towns, lash his chains and bells, and capture bad children in a basket.
