Kuchisake-onna was a woman whose mouth was slit from ear to ear, either as punishment for infidelity, during a medical procedure, or by a jealous woman. After her death, she returned as a vengeful spirit, or onryō, who covers her mouth with a cloth mask and carries a sharp instrument. Kuchisake-onna asks potential victims if they think she is attractive, often phrased as "Watashi, kirei?". If they say yes, she removes her mask to reveal her torn face and asks again. If they say no, she rips their face so it resembles hers.
