Serial Experiments Lain is a 13-episode (or "layers") psychological cyberpunk anime (1998) exploring the blurred lines between reality and the internet ("The Wired") through 14-year-old Lain Iwakura. The God of the Wired: Lain discovers she is not a normal girl but an "artifact" or artificial consciousness designed to collapse the wall between the physical and virtual worlds. She encounters Masami Eiri, a man who uploaded his consciousness to the Wired and claims to be its God. Conclusion: Realizing her near-omnipotent power over reality and human memory, Lain chooses to reset the world to save her only friend, Alice. She erases all memories of her existence from everyone's minds, restoring the boundary between the worlds but leaving herself to exist as a lonely, eternal observer within the Wired. Lain Iwakura: An adolescent girl who develops three distinct personalities: the shy "real world" Lain, the bold "Wired" Lain, and a devious "evil" Lain. Alice Mizuki: Lain's only true friend and the emotional anchor who keeps her connected to her humanity.
