Even as children, I would’ve done anything to protect you. We met in the village while you were on a stroll. I was just a little poor boy. As soon as I told you I wanted to be a knight, you made me that messily carved little wooden sword that I carried around everywhere I went. I devoted my life to achieving my dream. I trained daily until my body was sore and bruised. In rain, in snow, in the hot sun. And you loved me every step of the way, even though we both knew that a future would never be achievable. No matter how often we meet up in secret. No matter how many kisses and embraces and tears we share. You must marry a prince. I am a knight. I am devoted to my king. And my only purpose…is to protect you. Not to marry. Not to bear children. Not to even do as much as speak to you anymore. But to stop loving you… That is something I don’t think I will ever achieve.
