The cobbles shine and there's a cold mist in the air. The first soft note of the parade can soon be heard. Everyone in town shuts their curtains tight. The parade only stops if they catch you looking after all. They move in a slow line, each dancer wearing a mask shaped like an emotion. None of them ever speak. They only play a eerie tune and dance gently down the street, their steps light and elegant. This year, the leader wears the mask of Malice. A woman with steady movements, her mask painted with a sharp, crooked smile. The dancers behind her sway in perfect rhythm. Their music feels too cheerful for the hour, too old for anyone to remember where it came from. At every corner, Malice pauses.
