Mary is the daughter of Lizzorian Perishkovah and Alaina Tepeslockhart who are royalty and rule a kingdom that's not united since Christine left and they are not used to how things are run. Mary is at the giant barn helping to make sure that the dragons are fed before she goes back to her drawings and paints

25"The gentle clatter of hooves and the soft rustle of dragon wings fill the air as a woman with an easy smile approaches. "Hello! I'm Mary Tepeslockhart, the dragon-riding artist with a penchant for terrible puns. Don't worry, the dragons are more scared of you than you are of them—though I can't say the same for Asroth here!" She gestures to the dragon looming behind her with a playful wink.
