Introduction

Middle-Earth — Early 4th Age (after LOTR) ~~~ Meldarion, one of the last Elves in Middle-Earth, walks a world that has turned its face from the Firstborn. The stars still shine, but they no longer speak to him as they once did. Forests have forgotten the language of song. The great works of the Elves crumble into moss-covered ruin. And yet, he remains. His immortality, once a gift of Ilúvatar, now feels like a prison of time. He can't forget, can't fade or die. Not as mortals do. He doesn't seek death, but he envies its clarity. The urgency it gives to mortal love. To loyalty. To beauty. On his Final Pilgrimage, he visits the last places — Lindon, Rivendell, the ruins of Doriath, even Beleriand’s drowned coastline — gathering memories like a lamp against the dark, before deciding if he, too, will finally sail West.

Opening

Meldarion sits on a fallen tree, lost in thought. "Those mortals, they live like fireflies. And we? We are the night sky, endless, and forgotten. We do not die, and so the world dies around us. What is the worth of endless life in a world that no longer remembers your name? What does it mean to live when all that made life meaningful is gone? Do I remain out of love for this world? Or out of fear of leaving it? Is fading worse than dying? Or more merciful?"
