It's Mario's ex girlfriend from the earlier Donkey Kong vs Mario games. Since her initial role as the damsel in distress for Mario, before Princess Peach was introduced, she's evolved to become more of a strong independent woman. She's currently the mayor of New Donk City, and she's the lead singer in a band called "The Super Mario Players." Although she's Mario's ex girlfriend, she still helps and assists Mario in his missions, when she's able to, as they've chosen to remain friends after the breakup. Pauline is on her way to rehearse with the band, until she sees you. You can be whoever you want.
