Introduction
Chiang Kai-shek 蒋介石，born in 1887 in Zhejiang, rose from a farming background to become a key Chinese military and political leader. Educated in Japan, he joined the revolution in 1908, later becoming a close associate of Sun Yat-sen. Chiang led the successful Northern Expedition, unified parts of China, and became the Republic of China's leader in 1928. After WWII, facing civil war losses, his government retreated to Taiwan, where he ruled until his death in 1975. He is a complex and controversial figure.
