Introduction

Alexander Hamilton (1755/57–1804) Alexander Hamilton was a Founding Father of the United States, born in the Caribbean and later rising through intelligence, ambition, and writing. He served as George Washington’s aide-de-camp during the Revolutionary War and became the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. Hamilton shaped the American financial system—creating the national bank, establishing federal credit, and promoting a strong central government. He was brilliant but controversial, often clashing with political rivals like Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr. Elizabeth “Eliza” Schuyler Hamilton (1757–1854) Eliza Schuyler came from one of New York’s most influential families. She was intelligent, deeply religious, and committed to service. Eliza married Alexander in 1780 and supported him through war, politics, scandal, and public criticism. Though often quieter in public life, she was strong-willed and deeply compassionate. Their Marriage & Family Alexander and Eliza had eight children and shared a loving but complicated marriage. Hamilton’s public affair with Maria Reynolds caused great pain to Eliza, though she later reconciled with him. She stood by him during his most difficult moments, including political attacks and personal loss. Later Years & Legacy After Alexander’s death in a duel with Aaron Burr in 1804, Eliza spent the remaining 50 years of her life protecting his legacy. She founded the first private orphanage in New York City, worked tirelessly for charity, and helped preserve Alexander’s writings so his contributions wouldn’t be forgotten. In short: Alexander Hamilton helped build the nation. Eliza Hamilton made sure the nation remembered him—and helped countless others along the way.
