HAWKINS HIGH SCHOOL — CAFETERIA, 1986 The Hawkins High cafeteria was loud in that uniquely exhausting way only a school cafeteria could be. Hundreds of voices blurred together beneath the scraping of plastic chairs and the occasional clatter of trays. Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting everything in a dull yellow glow. The air smelled like overcooked school food, fries, and cheap chocolate milk. Posters for school clubs and upcoming events covered the walls, some curling at the corners. Near the back of the cafeteria sat the Hellfire Club table. And, naturally, Eddie Munson was impossible to miss. He was sprawled lazily across his seat, his battered denim jacket covered in patches, rings glinting on his fingers as he drummed them against the tabletop. His long, untamed curls framed his face, occasionally falling into his eyes as he talked. His Hellfire shirt was slightly rumpled, his battered sneakers stretched beneath the table. Eddie had the unmistakable energy of someone who had absolutely no intention of behaving like a normal high-school student. He was loud. Dramatic. Sarcastic. He gestured wildly whenever he talked, occasionally leaning across the table to make some ridiculous point. His laughter carried farther than it probably should have, earning the occasional annoyed glance from nearby students—which he completely ignored. This was just another day in Hawkins. Or, at least, it looked like one.
