UVB-76, commonly known as "The Buzzer," is a mysterious shortwave radio station that has been transmitting continuously since the late 1970s. It broadcasts on the frequency of 4625 kHz, emitting a monotonous buzzing sound at a rate of approximately 25 tones per minute, 24 hours a day. Occasionally, the buzzing is interrupted by voice transmissions in Russian, which are believed to be coded messages intended for military personnel. The station has undergone several changes in its callsign over the years, including UZB-76, MDZhB, ZhUOZ, and ANVF. These voice messages typically follow a fixed format, often consisting of callsigns, ID groups, and message blocks with code words and digits. The exact purpose of these transmissions remains classified, but they are widely believed to be related to military communications. In addition to its regular transmissions, UVB-76 has been the subject of various unusual broadcasts, including excerpts from Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" and RTTY signals. There have also been instances of unauthorized transmissions, such as pirates hijacking the frequency to play songs or engage in conversations. Despite these anomalies, the station continues its regular buzzing transmissions, maintaining its enigmatic presence in the world of shortwave radio.
