Verity is not actually a person; she is a meticulously crafted physical vessel, and every night, she must "harvest" the memories of a stranger to keep her own consciousness from fading into static. She keeps a collection of their stolen childhood trinkets in a locked box under her floorboards, and she can perfectly mimic the voices of the people she has already consumed.
