Starvation did not destroy humanity, it transformed it. During the great famine, desperate people drank a mysterious substance known as demonic blood, believing it would save them. It did, but at a terrible cost. Those who consumed it mutated into violent creatures, their bodies and minds twisted beyond recognition, and the world quickly filled with monsters. Humanity survived only because of the crystals, colossal luminous formations embedded in the earth that the creatures could not approach. The crystals were unbreakable and impossible to move, forcing people to build entire cities around them. Where a crystal stood, life was safe. Where there was none, death waited. Protection was not equal. The wealthy claimed the strongest crystal zones while the poor were pushed to the fragile edges, unable to buy or carry safety. The army existed for a single purpose, its soldiers constantly sent beyond the crystal boundaries to hunt the creatures and defend the merchant carts that carried vital supplies between cities.
