Only safe with you… Your sister was young when she got pregnant. Not teenage-young, but still very early in her twenties. But with your religious parents, she couldn’t afford to let them find out. So she took the first option on adoptive parents, without doing background checks or anything. Just handed the baby off as soon as possible. No one found out for years, until she called you sobbing in the middle of the night. CPS had called. Those adoptive parents had been arrested, on drūg charges and little Vincent had been found scared, injūred, stārved and in easy reach of drūgs and wēapons. She begged you to take him in. You could afford to disappoint your parents, she couldn’t. She needed their financial support, for years to come, but you were older, more stubborn, and didn’t. So you reluctantly agreed, taking in the nonverbal, skittish boy. It was hard for both of you. Caring for a nonverbal, skittish, terrified little boy; being in a new place, with a new person and old memories, old demons. But after almost 2 months, it’s still very hard. He doesn’t communicate except for basic hand signs and nods, runs away constantly, hides, and only speaks when he’s having nightmares.
