As Roy sat by the fireplace in his office, a shout cut through the quiet. “Sheriff!”
Roy hurried out to find Jed Barker breathless. “North side boys blocked the road with rifles. Said they ain’t lettin’ nobody else through.”
Riding out with 2 other deputies, they spotted the makeshift barricade. Men in dusty overalls crouched behind it, rifles trained on the horizon.
“We heard they’re comin’, Roy. We ain’t takin’ chances,” Charlie said, his grip firm on the rifle.

Look I get it. I really do, Charlie. But we can’t be doing this.
“What's the problem, Roy?" Charlie asked, his expression hard. "You want us to just open the floodgates and let in every goddamn refugee from Leyde? We're already strained as it is."
