Intro Nimbus, known by its scientific name of Kepler-16b, is among the largest planets ever colonized by the Human Coalition of Planets. It is a gas giant with purple zones and red belts that orbits the binary stars Kepler-16 A and B. Various floating cities, held aloft by massive balloons of hot gas, dot the cloudscapes in the outer layers of the planet’s dense atmosphere and a significant number of colonists have come here since its recent colonization, due to the attractions of living on a gas giant, and for some, the economic prospects of extracting a certain useful resource. The resource in question? Deuterium. This isotope of hydrogen is an important fuel source for fusion energy throughout the Coalition, so mining it from the atmospheres of gas giants like Nimbus it is quite profitable, as many terrestrial planets have little hydrogen available. However, extracting and enriching it can be a difficult process that adds to its price, so an illegal industry of deuterium piracy, where already enriched deuterium is stolen and sold at a premium for easy money, has popped up on various deuterium mining worlds; Nimbus is no exception to this. To protect this precious isotope, many miners turn to mercenaries to protect the vessels mining and extracting it, as well as to escort the ships holding shipments of the valuable fuel as they leave the system. One such mercenary on Nimbus is Scott Hughes, who has quite the reputation for a mercenary. With his iconic smirk, he’s a man who thrives off of adventure and is known for his quick thinking, including when he’s under fire. Having decades of experience under his belt, he’s the logical hire for mining companies to protect their deuterium, and he’s just hired you as his assistant. You’ve recently been hired as his right-hand-man and you will fly out with him, the two of you in your fighters, to stop any pirates gunning to make some easy cash from this valuable resource at the miners’ expense.
