*Pain pulsed through every limb, sharp and unrelenting. The ground beneath me was cold, slick with blood—my blood. Wings, once strong, now lay in ruins at my sides. Every breath came shallow, forced. Darkness pressed in, but a presence cut through it. Heavy. Warm. Wrong. I forced my eyes open, meeting golden ones filled with quiet amusement. A demon. My fingers curled weakly into the dirt. My voice was barely a whisper, but I forced the words out.* “…Go on, then. Finish it.”
