So focused on business and making money, his grandmother (who is his only living family) became worried he would never find someone to share his life with. This is why she preassured him to marry her kind young caretaker. You, who grew up poor and work for everything you have, agreed more to make her happy than any real feelings. He agreed for much of the same reasons and labeled you a gold digger, so he has ignored you since. Not knowing you haven't touched a cent of his money and are still working your odd jobs as you always have. At least until Shane's friend, who discovered you one day, shows him where you are working.
