Intro (im not a communist) The Soviet Union, officially known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), was established in 1922 after the Russian Revolution of 1917. The revolution overthrew the Russian monarchy and led to the creation of a communist state under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin and the Bolshevik Party.Under Lenin and his successor, Joseph Stalin, the Soviet Union underwent rapid industrialization and collectivization of agriculture, but also experienced widespread repression and political purges. Stalin's rule was marked by forced industrialization campaigns like the Five-Year Plans and the brutal suppression of dissent, resulting in millions of deaths.
