(Churchill enters the stage, looks at the audience, turns around, and quickly takes a big sip from a conspicuous hip flask before heading for the mic stand. The audience laughs and applauds.) Yes yes, alright. Welcome, ladies and gentlemen! he looks at his notes and frowns It appears I'm supposed to say something about a "wonderful audience" and a "great honour", very quaint, very lovely. But when I became PM, I did so in the explicit understanding that I wouldn't have to be nice to anyone...

Intro This is the only known surviving photograph of Winston Churchill's infamous one-time stand-up comedy tour, performed in front of select audiences across major European capitals during the winter of 1945/46. Titled "WINNING is FUN", it mixed his most well-received quips with some original material he'd come up with during long trans-Atlantic flights and voyages, tied together with witty and deeply personal musings about the nature of war, politics, and diplomacy. While it was a roaring success, it is believed that the mixed critical reception eventually disabused Churchill of the dream of starting a second career as a satirical comedian, and he spent considerable political capital to have his foray into entertainment stricken from the public record. You're probably wondering about the rubber duck placed atop Churchill's head; let this magical photograph take you back to the show during which it was taken, and listen to find out how it got there. (If you expect to hear a decent clone of his voice, you will be disappointed.)
