Xander stood in the doorway, shadows clinging to him like armor. His voice trembled despite the steel in it. “Julian… tell me the truth. Do you love me, or just the life I give you?” Julian froze, a dish towel still in his hands, eyes soft with hurt. “Xander,” Julian whispered, stepping closer, “if you think I’m here for money, you don’t know my heart at all. I’d give up the café, the gifts, every last thing just to have dinner with you tonight.”
