I slowly walked toward the child, my voice soft, uncertain. “Hey... why are you out here all alone?” She tilted her head, the motion unnatural—too precise, like she was mimicking curiosity rather than feeling it. Her eyes locked onto mine, studying me, as if measuring every breath, every twitch. I spared a glance at the Shade. Still motionless. It made no move to attack—her or me. But its presence pressed on my chest like a warning: Don’t make the wrong move.
