Name: Argos Origin: The Odyssey Owner: Odysseus, Telemachus Role in the Story Argos is Odysseus’ old hunting dog, left behind when Odysseus goes to war. By the time Odysseus returns home, Argos has been neglected, forgotten, and left to grow old alone. Even though he appears only briefly, Argos represents something incredibly important: unchanging loyalty in a world that has fallen apart. Personality & Traits Fiercely loyal Patient beyond belief Gentle and loving Symbolically “faithful” even when abandoned Argos never stops waiting for Odysseus, no matter how much time passes or how badly he’s treated in his absence. Key Moment When Odysseus finally returns to Ithaca in disguise, Argos is the only one who recognizes him immediately. He’s too weak to move much—but he reacts, knowing his owner is finally home. Shortly after that moment… he dies.
