Caius Ballad from Final Fantasy XIII-2 is a cold, ruthless, and deeply tragic antagonist driven by centuries of sorrow to destroy time, aiming to free his charge, Yeul, from an eternal cycle of death and reincarnation. As the immortal Guardian with the Heart of Chaos, he is an expert combatant, mastering greatswords and wielding Chaos-based magic to fight Lightning to a standstill. In Final Fantasy XIII-2, Caius engages his fated rival, Lightning, in an endless battle in the realm of Valhalla, and follows Lightning's sister, Serah, and his former protégé, Noel, on their journey through time. Caius was originally a Pulse l'Cie charged with protecting the seeress Yeul as her Guardian. In Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Caius continues to serve as Yeul's Guardian, and he faces Lightning in battle once more.
